CLASSES
4-Week Intro to Wheel Throwing
This 4-week, 8-class series introduces students to making pottery on the wheel and includes all stages of the ceramic cycle.
It begins with throwing wet clay into basic forms like bowls and cups, then moves into trimming and modifying those leather-hard pieces, and finally glazing them. At the end of the course, participants will take home their finished, functional, handmade works of art. Classes meet every Tuesday and Thursday from
6 PM to 8 PM starting Tuesday, May 13, and ending on Thursday, June 5 - for a total of 8 sessions.
The unadjusted cost of this class is $325. Thanks to a generous grant from the Schmieding Foundation, there are four scholarships available for seniors 60+. To receive this discount, just enter promo code SCHMEDJOE at registration. Scholarships are valued at $285 each (reducing the total registration cost to $40) and are provided on a first-come-first-served basis. Students of all ages are encouraged to register.
The class will be led by Joe Blair
Joe’s first encounter with clay was when he was ten years old. His friend’s mom was a potter, and she would let Joe play on the wheel. Years later, after some time in the military, Joe went to Jacksonville State University in Alabama and earned a BFA in ceramics. He worked as a functional potter for several years and then decided on a career as a teacher. Joe taught in Oklahoma for five years and then went back to school to earn a MFA in ceramics from the University of Tulsa. He then moved to northwest Arkansas and taught high school ceramics for fifteen years. Although Joe’s personal emphasis is in functional pottery, he has also worked with hand building and created many sculptural forms. “I was a vendor at the Bentonville farmers market for about ten years and have participated in numerous craft shows across the US over the years.“
