8 week - Introductory to Wheel Throwing

This course introduces students to the art of making ceramics using the potter’s wheel. Over its 8-week duration students will learn the fundamental skills used to form cylinders, bowls, and vases/bottles. In addition to throwing, this course covers wedging, trimming, and glazing, as well as making and attaching handles.

Each class will start with a demonstration and discussion, where students will be encouraged to bring in pieces of pottery and/or other objects they draw inspiration from. Class size will be limited to 6 students, giving participants individualized attention. Although no previous experience working with clay is required, this class will be a fairly in depth look into the ceramic process, and students that have taken pottery courses in the past who wish to hone their skills or address problem areas are encouraged to enroll as well.

Class fee is $320 per person and will include 25 lbs of cone 6 stoneware clay, food safe glazes, and firing in the studio’s electric kiln in oxidation. No outside clay will be allowed, however, additional clay may be purchased from the studio for $5 per 5 lb block.

Sangeet Gupta is a ceramic artist and educator who has been making both functional and sculptural work for 20 years. He began learning to make pottery while living in Chicago, and upon returning to his hometown of Fayetteville, Arkansas in 2019, he started the task of building a studio in Winslow, Arkansas. Sangeet was honored to have a solo installation of large wood fired vessels during the summer of 2023 at the Walton Arts Center in conjunction with the 2nd Annual Arkansas Pottery Festival. He has since been awarded an Artist 360 Community Activator Grant from the Mid-America Arts Alliance to help with the construction of his first wood kiln.
